Sealing wax was first used in Mesopotamia to authenticate written tablets. Its use in sealing letters dates back to about the 16th century. In the old days, sealing wax was used to protect the privacy of letters. A broken seal easily revealed tampering. Special seals and sealing stamps were also status symbols for royalty and higher society. Sealing wax melts quickly, and holds an impression when stamped.
