This year, we are exploring “A World of Magic” as I take students through the history of global civilizations and metacultures. Each month, we will learn about the gemstones and minerals of the focal civilization with a specific theme. Our focus will span from ancient times to the common era. Together, we will harness the power of these crystals, infusing our modern practice with the magic of all time.

February 2018 Gem Wise Set: Stones of Immortality, Love, and Protection

This month, we will be focusing on Stones of Immortality, Love, and Protection, and their connection with Ancient Egypt. You will receive gorgeous examples of lapis lazuli, green chert, sunstone, carnelian, and mugglestone, in your Gem Wise set. You will also receive an engraved acrylic, (about 4×4”), designed to grid and hold the magic of Egypt and the intentions of your stones.

The scarab beetle is associated with the Egyptian god of the rising sun, Khepri, a form of Ra. Khepri comes from the Egyptian word kheper, meaning “to be transformed”. The god Khepri is often depicted as a scarab beetle pushing the sun along the sky, renewing it for each day, and making it rise at dawn. Scarab magic is all about new creation, immortality, and restoration of life, and permeates Egyptian history, art, artifacts, and folklore. Ancient Egyptians believed that the intellect dwelt within the heart, and it was of utmost importance that the heart remain within the mummified body. Ma’at, the goddess of truth, would weigh the mortal heart against a feather, and if the heart was light, the soul would enter the afterlife. These stones were chosen to reconnect you with the eternal cycle of transformation, in all its forms, in both this life and the next.

Each stone in this set represents a sacred Egyptian symbol or image: Lapis lazuli for Scarab (symbol of new life and transformation), green chert for Ankh (symbol for life), sunstone for Lotus (representing the sun – follows the sun), carnelian for Djed (a pillar representing stability), and mugglestone for Was-scepter (representing power – the power you need within yourself to change).
