It was created with custom SG artwork and printed right here at SGHQ and features a rune layout. Runes are letters in a set of related alphabets known as runic alphabets, used throughout Northern Europe, Scandinavia, the British Isles, and Iceland from about 150 A.D. to 1600 A.D. They were used for writing, divination, and magic. This mat also features Yggdrasil, the enormous tree in Norse mythology, and it’s also known as the world tree. It represents the universe and everything in it. This mat also comes with a postcard to explain the rune layout. You can place it on your altar or anywhere in your sacred space.

The deeper magic of this Rune Casting Divination Mat

Runes have been worked with for centuries and there are several variants of the runic alphabet. The one we use here at Sage Goddess is Elder Futhark, the oldest of them all, consisting of 24 runes. The first six runes of the alphabet spell out the word “FUTHARK.” The name rune itself, taken to mean “secret, something hidden,” seems to indicate knowledge of the runes was originally considered esoteric or restricted to an elite. Each rune has esoteric meanings and properties associated with it. Each rune represents a word or a phrase signifying concepts important to the early peoples who used them, associated with the forces of nature and mind. Each rune has a story attached to it; a relationship to a Norse god. When you choose to work with runes (or as some would say – when the runes choose you), you initiate yourself into a quest for deeper wisdom. Runes are wonderful divination and meditation tools. Work with them for more insight and guidance in your life.

Yggdrasil’s branches hold the Nine Worlds of Norse cosmology and connect them all together. “Yggdrasil” comes from “Yggr” meaning “terrible” and “drasil” meaning “horse.” It’s a reference to Odin, the god of healing, poetry, magic, and knowledge. In his unyielding search for knowledge, Odin sacrificed himself on the world tree. He’s known as the universal image on The Hanged Man Tarot card. Legend says his coat caught in the world tree’s branches, and he hung, suspended between heaven and earth. His horse and ravens were unable to free him, and he struggled with himself for nine nights. In this state of inner journey and surrender, Odin perceived the runes, symbols of the secrets of existence and life’s greatest values. After his transformation, while hanging from the tree, he was able to free himself and initiate his companions into the sacred lore of runes.
