Limited Edition Nightshade Accord Collection: Mandrake Perfume

Welcome to a new and limited edition line of spray perfumes made exclusively in house at Sage Goddess. Designed to replicate the magic (albeit in a safe and synthetic form) of the family of plants known as the Solanaceae, the third in this series is my Limited Edition Nightshade Accord Collection: Mandrake Perfume. The root of the word Solanaceae comes from the Latin solare, which means “to soothe or comfort” and refers to the psychotropic properties of many of the plants in this particular genus.

Among the Solanaceae are Petunia and Tobacco, but for this perfume series, I chose to recreate the energy of my favorite nightshade plants: Datura, Belladonna, and Mandragora (Mandrake). The legends of these plants are deep and mysterious, their powers potent and unyielding. As a master perfumer, I undertook the task of creating perfume accords or formulas consisting of multiple notes and oils that replicate the energy of these plant teachers but in a way that is safe for topical application. As the nightshades are deadly plants, these perfumes are a fun and interesting way to experience their magic safely, translating their energy into scent you can wear.

The deeper magic of my Limited Edition Nightshade Accord Collection: Mandrake Perfume

The three Nightshade perfumes in this series are sold individually but are meant to be layered and worn together for optimal effect. I consider this a collectible series and chose the timing of their launch with intention. I cannot imagine a more sultry or seductive line of perfumes to offer you on the heels of Samhain and the darker months of the year. Even the bottles in which these perfumes are housed were custom designed as well as the labels to ensure that these bring a bit of gothic glam to your vanity or altar.

The third in the series is Mandragora, which is the botanical name for Mandrake. Mandrake is a family of 3-5 varieties of plants, all of which are part of the Mandrake family. This infamous genus of plants is poisonous in large quantities; in low doses, it was used throughout Europe for pain relief and sedation. This perfume is an homage to Mandrake, an accord made of non-poisonous notes designed to give you the experience of Mandragora without any of its dangerous side effects.

Mandrake is the original flying herb, used widely in European traditions for astral travel and projection because it was known to make the spirit buoyant and able to float outside the body for intense meditation experiences. I’ve worked with Mandrake root in its dried form for almost 30 years and it truly is a queen among queens when it comes to deepening your connection to Spirit. In the Bible, Mandrake is mentioned as an herb that facilitates pregnancy. And yes, it is said that when Mandrake root is harvested, the plant emits a sound that has been described as shrieking or screaming as if it physically feels itself being harvested. The alkaloids in Mandrake lead to intense hallucinations when ingested. But not to worry – this perfume is an accord of Mandrake, a blend of oils to mimic its scent without the extreme side effects associated with this wildly intoxicating plant mistress.

In creating this scent, I chose four flowers and accords that recreate the experience of working with this sacred plant teacher. Those notes are Agarwood or Oud, to soften and relax you, as well as bring emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness; Frankincense for protection and consecration; Cyclamen for love and self-esteem (sacred to Hecate herself, which is why it had to be here); and Fern accord to bring protection and fairy medicine to your door. These four notes are blended with alcohol in this blend and all are fixatives, so this will be a long-lasting scent to guide and inspire you. Each bottle is infused with a smoky quartz chip stone for purification, protection, and grounding.
